What is Mission:  Enduring Gratitude?

One of the hardest things to do as a parent is research on the numbers of our Military personnel that have been injured while serving our great nation in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.  None of us wants to even is that 1 in 10 of our armed forces personnel will be affected in some way physically or mentally as a result of serving.  Statistics however, think are very hard to come by.  And when we do find them, they can be overwhelming.  They can also be conflicting (the 1 in 10 number is also reported at 1 in 20, 1 in 30, etc).

The Defense Department says more than 24,000 have been wounded, about 11,000 of those injured so severely they are unable to return to the fight. Of that, estimates are over 1,700 U.S. military personnel return from combat with brain and spinal cord injuries.  Another report indicates that out of the 5.5 million veterans who received services in 2006 from the Department of Veterans' Affairs, more than 184,500 served in Iraq or Afghanistan, (according to the VA's 2006 annual report).  The VA is doing all they can, and are striving to improve the speed and efficiency of their services.  The hospital care our military receives is second to none—it’s when they are discharged from the hospital, but are not ready to return to duty, it can be a difficult and lonely experience. MCFSC continues to send care packages to our Marines, and we will continue to solicit donations to fill those packages—it’s an important part of what we do as an organization.

However, we also know that there are a growing number of military personnel who are returning from war zones with injuries that have forever changed their lives.  When the war ends, their individual journeys are just beginning as they and their families readjust to the reality of their injuries.

MCFSC has been blessed.  Our donations keep coming and for that we are thankful.  That’s why we have teamed up with the Warrior Foundation, an affiliate of the Navy League of San Diego to help.  There are military personnel at Balboa Naval Hospital with traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, and a host of other injuries.  They need our helping hand.  And there is so much we can do to help.  A dinner out with family after spending months in Medical Hold (not ill enough to stay in the hospital, but not well enough to return to active duty) will show that soldier, sailor, marine or airman that we care and that we appreciate the sacrifices they have made. Many families cannot afford to visit their injured son or daughter; Warrior Foundation works with the airline industry to make these important visits happen.  There are other needs as well and we rely on the Warrior Foundation at Balboa to identify those needs.  If you would like to make a contribution to these efforts you can send a check to MCFSC or use our PayPal option.  Please indicate that your donation is intended for support of our wounded by sending an e-mail to carolmichel@mcfscoh.org.

IN 2008...

MCFSC donated 200 model cars and planes, plus paint and glue kits to the wounded at Balboa Naval Hospital.

YOU MAY WONDER...  Why models?

The wounded at Balboa are recovering from traumatic brain injuries and amputations--the simple act of putting together a model not only gives them something to do, it helps them with manual dexterity.  Plus the guys really appreciated the efforts!

IN 2007...

Mission Enduring Gratitude provided 200 new "plush towels" ( to replace the GI issued thin towels)

Please note:  The Government DOES supply towels to the hospitals--please do not think this means that they do not!  The towels that MCFSC has donated are softer and larger than the government provides.  This is a COMFORT for our wounded, a little extra message of love and support to those that have sacrificed so much for our own comfort.

MEG provided 200 Thumb Drives (Flash drives for storing computer files) for the wounded.  This will enable them to save their own personal work/files when they use the shared computers--they can keep their lessons, their homework, their own digital pictures that family sends--stuff that makes their flash drive their own!

A Message from the Warrior Foundation to MCFSC:

Summer, 2007

Thank you all so very much for your continued support of our Warriors up in the Medical Hold at the Naval Medical Center Southwest Region- Balboa, Camp Pendleton, MCRD, 29 Palms, 32nd Street Naval Base. The Warriors wanted to express just how very much your support has meant to them.  The Warriors want you all to know that they appreciate everything that has been done for them. Each and everyone of our Warriors feel that they were all just doing their jobs and in there words  "aren't anything special!"  We know better!  They continue to work hard to return to their units, ships, commands, brigades-and for some their therapy and medical retirements as well as new careers.   We can only continue to help these men and women who have given so very much with your continued support. WE continue to give 100 percent of all donations to our warriors and YOU ALL ARE MAKING REAL DIFFERENCES IN THEIR DAY TO DAY QUALITY OF LIFE.

...from a host of donors including your group in Ohio.  In specific, the models you provided to our warriors were a wonderful gift.  It provided in-room activity that helped improved individual memory and dexterity while at the same time providing hours and hours of enjoyable past time.  We cannot thank you enough and your wonderful supporters in Ohio for this.  And newly arriving warriors once in Building 26 now are asking if they can get a model of their favorite car or truck.  Now that tells me that we have reached them and given something they appreciate.

Warrior Foundation Thank You to MCFSC:  Winter, 2009

Merry Christmas from the Warrior Foundation

Wishing you every happiness this Christmas Season and
Prosperity in the New Year.

A very special thanks to all who helped in a big way to make Christmas a little more special for our warriors by coming up to decorate their barracks area.  The warriors really loved the thoughts and prayers and all the loving hands that made it happen.  Their faces were all smiles.

Thanks to all of you we have been booking airline tickets for our Warriors to head for home.  You all have made it happen for many of our warriors who could not have been home with their familes for the holidays.

A Warrior's Thank you arrived yesterday and here is his message to all of you!

To all involved with the Warrior Foundation
Words can not describe how incredibly grateful I am for all you have done for us. I went thru a very traumatic event that changed my life forever, and I was facing Christmas and the New Year in the hospital due to no money to afford a flight home.  Now I'll be able to be with my famliy.  God Bless you! And I won't ever forget...I would take the bullet again for you all.

An Army Warrior.
(He will head for home this week)

WE can and do make a difference for each and every one of our Warriors.  We also vow too to continue to help Every Warrior Every Time. They are so humble and ask for so little.   It is a great feeling to share with you the smiles, the light in their eyes when they all realized that they too would be able to be home and to share some of the flair and traditions we all so enjoy over the Holiday Season.

Thanks again for your continued support to the Warrior Foundation, the San Diego Council of the Navy League , and the Rick Robets Show 760 KFMB.

Mission: Enduring Gratitude

In 2006 the Marine Corp Family Support Community expanded our missions to include support for those wounded in support of the Global War on Terror.  When one of our local Marines was wounded and treated at Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego we established a relationship with The Warrior Foundation.  The Warrior Foundation is dedicated to providing for those recovering in the Med-Hold unit at Balboa.  While a Naval Hospital, Balboa provides treatments to Marines, Sailors and Soldiers who have suffered amputations or Traumatic Brain Injuries.

Since the establishment of Mission: Enduring Gratitude, MCFSC has provided new pillows, plush towels, computer thumb-drives and model car kits.  We rely on the Warrior Foundation to tell us what our warriors want or need.

For 2009 the request was for Challenge Coin display trays.  It is tradition in the military for units and high ranking officers to have custom coins which they handout on special occasions, such as visits with our wounded warriors. Those recovering at Balboa have received many and wanted to display them in their rooms.  MCFSC purchased 500 trays which were included in Christmas gift bags distributed by the Warrior Foundation to all service members at Balboa on December 10th.  Our members who prepared our Christmas boxes which were sent to our deployed also wrapped all of these trays before they were shipped to Balboa.

Additionally, we obtained over 2000 Christmas card signed by the public to show how much they love and support our military.  Of these, 1600 were shipped to Balboa.  These cards were taped to walls on all floors of the Med-Hold units so that all that passed could see and feel the love and support America has for the sacrifices they have made.

I had the humbling honor to travel to Balboa to participate in distributing the gift bags to our Marines, Sailors and Soldiers.  These wounded warriors face their challenges with the same courage and commitment as they did when serving our country on the battlefield.  Their appreciation of support was heart felt.  Most memorable was a young female in a wheelchair, who told us “this is my best Christmas ever”.

Keep them all in your thoughts and prayer for a speedy recovery.
